Recently, we were asked “Why Should People Shred?” This seems like such a simple question but it’s not as straightforward as it seems. The basic reason to shred is to destroy confidential information and avoid identity theft and information theft. However, many people are motivated to shred because their file cabinets or storage facilities have run out of space.
The following are reasons why people should shred:
- Fight identity theft
- Safeguard confidential information
- Protect consumer privacy
- Secure trade secrets & proprietary information
- Eliminate the liability of keeping information that is no longer needed
- Avoid criminal penalties and civil fines
- Protect personal and business reputation
- Comply with federal regulations—FACTA, GLBA & HIPAA
- Be environmentally friendly—shredded paper is recycled
Security and proper disposal of sensitive information are of the greatest importance in shredding confidential documents to prevent identity theft and information theft. Never keep confidential information for longer than necessary. In particular, do not keep sensitive documents for longer than legally required. It is your legal responsibility to maintain a secure chain of custody until the information is destroyed by ensuring that the information never leaves your location in useable form.
For utmost security and protection, use a NAID AAA Certified on-site/mobile shredding company to secure and destroy your confidential information. The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) sets service standards and requirements for the information destruction industry.
If you have questions regarding proper document security procedures, we are here to help you.
